Scrapbook of Philip Barbour Ambler of Virginia, a teacher and farmer, containing a coat of arms of the Ambler family; newspaper clippings, mainly, of Latin and Greek poetry, articles about the Civil War and sentimental and domestic topics; occasional marriage and obituary notices for the Ambler and Nicholas families; and articles concerning Hollins Institute, now Hollins College, Hollins, Va., one institution where Ambler taught. Loose items include an obituary notice for Mary (Cary) Stribling, a diagram of the Confederate field positions at the Battle of Gettysburg, and an article about Elijah Jones, originally a slave of Jaquelin Ambler.

Hollins College, a women's liberal arts college, was founded as the coeducational Valley Union Seminary in Roanoke, North Carolina in 1842. In 1854, it became Virginia's first women's college changing its name to Hollins Institute three years later. It was renamed Hollins College in 1911 and Hollins University in 1998.
